Due to improper machining of the oil seal installation hole in the transfer cover, the oil seal may come loose from the hole. This can lead to loss of automatic transmission fluid from the automatic gearbox, thus, there is a possibility of poor gear shifting and illumination of the warning light. This risk may increase if the key ring is carrying added weight (such as more keys or the key fob) or the vehicle experiences rough road conditions or other jarring or impact related events. When the ignition switch is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury or fatality. Some vehicles may also have a condition in which the ignition key may be removed when the ignition is not in the “Off” position.
